English name: Zinc iodide
Chemical formula: ZnI2
CAS: 10139-47-6
Relative molecular weight: 319.2179
Properties: White or nearly white fine granular powder or colorless hexagonal crystal. Easy deliquescence. Dissolved in ethanol, ether, ammonia, sodium hydroxide and ammonium carbonate solution, slightly soluble in glycerol. Easily soluble in water aqueous solution pH ~5, melting point 446℃, boiling point 624℃. At room temperature, it reacts with O2 H2O to form ZnO and I2, reacts with sulfuric acid to form SO2 and I2, and forms ammonia complex with NH3, which begins to decompose at 1150 ℃.
Main applications: 1.Medical treatment for local antiseptic disinfectant, astringent; Used in iodine starch reagent for the determination of nitrite; Used as a reagent for free chlorine and other oxidants.2. Zinc iodide can effectively prepare organic zinc reagents through the transfer metallization reaction, and as a mild Lewis acid can also promote the addition reaction and substitution reaction. Zinc iodide can be transferred to organic metal reagents such as organic lithium, organic magnesium and organic copper to obtain organic zinc reagents, which can be used as nucleophile to participate in palladium-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond coupling reaction of carbon cationic reagents such as alkyl iodine compounds. The interaction of zinc iodide with diazomethane also provides a new method for the synthesis of the Simmons-Smith reagent (iodomethyl zinc iodide).
